Drum Gear Coupling: A Rigid-Flexible Coupling for Heavy-Duty Power Transmission

2026-04-22 Visits:1

A Drum Gear Coupling (also known as a Crowned Gear Coupling) is a high-performance, rigid-flexible mechanical coupling designed to connect two rotating shafts, transmit large torques, and compensate for significant axial, radial, and angular misalignments. It is the most widely used gear coupling in heavy industry, renowned for its exceptional load capacity, durability, and reliability.

Core Structure

A standard drum gear coupling consists of two main components:

External Gear Sleeves: Fitted with drum-shaped (crowned) teeth on their outer circumference. The tooth profile is a convex arc along the tooth width, with the spherical center on the gear axis.

Internal Gear Rings: Enclosed within a flanged housing, with internal teeth that mesh precisely with the external drum teeth.

Additional components include seals, end caps, and lubrication ports to ensure proper operation and maintenance.

Working Principle

Torque is transmitted through the meshing contact between the external drum teeth and the internal gear teeth. The unique drum-shaped tooth profile is the key to its performance:

Under perfect alignment, the teeth make contact at the center of the tooth flank.

When shaft misalignment occurs, the convex drum shape allows the contact point to smoothly shift along the tooth width. This maintains full surface contact, avoids harmful edge loading and stress concentration, and enables the coupling to accommodate misalignment without binding or premature wear.

Key Advantages

Superior Misalignment Compensation: Compared to straight-tooth gear couplings, drum gear couplings offer 50% greater angular displacement capacity (up to 1°30') and excellent radial and axial compensation.

High Load Capacity: For the same physical size, its load-bearing capacity is 15–20% higher than straight-tooth designs, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications.

Extended Service Life: The improved tooth contact distribution significantly reduces wear, lowers noise, and extends the operational life of both the coupling and connected machinery.

Compact & Efficient: Features a compact design with high power density and high transmission efficiency.

Versatile Speed Range: Standard units excel in low-speed, heavy-load scenarios. Precision-manufactured and dynamically balanced versions are suitable for high-speed applications like gas turbines.
